Description: Learn the basics of immersion dyeing and colour mixing using WashFast Acid dyes on wool. Students will work together to dye up to 72 samples consisting of 6 step DOS scales for 6 primary colours and all the possible combinations of 2 primaries to make 12 samples of each secondary colour. Safety, good measuring and record keeping practices and basic colour theory will also be covered. You will leave the workshop with a completed sample book. All equipment and supplies will be provided.
NB: Acid dyes are for protein fibres such as wool, silk, mohair, and alpaca; if you are interested in dyeing cellulose fibres such as cotton, tencel and bamboo a different class of dyes known as Fibre Reactive is required with very different procedures. A workshop on these dyes may be arranged in the future.
Prerequisite: None
Students should bring: comfortable shoes, apron or smock, gloves (if you prefer non-disposable ones), lunch if possible as we will be taking smaller breaks rather than a longer lunch break. Pen and paper if desired for notes.
Materials Fee: $25 includes all dyes and assistants, sample skeins, sample mounting materials, calculation sheets, disposable gloves.
